A completely new digital approach to the surveillance and monitoring your store is now available through KSI. Through our digital video recorder surveillance and monitoring service, we can take the worries out of any type of alarm situation that occurs in your store.

  • Tripped alarms can be verified before you receive a false alarm call that wakes you up in the middle of the night.
  • Emails can be sent that give a digital video clip of what actually occurred when the alarm was tripped.
  • Voice communication allows us to reach you through speakers in the store to protect you from would-be assailants by announcing our presence when the situation arises. Imagine hearing, “This is a routine security sweep, we are simply checking in on you. You feel safer and the would-be assailant changes his mind.

Choosing a Digital Video Recorder

There are three main factors when choosing the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) that is right for your business:

  1. Software - This is by far the most important factor in choosing a DVR. When looking at a software package, the goal is to find something that is both easy to use and offers you the most effective search capabilities for your business. When compared to a VCR that only allows you to review a tape with fast-forward and rewind, a DVR opens up many more possibilities. A DVR should have:
    • a simple way to search for the time and date of recorded events
    • an interface that allows for you to easily switch from live mode to review mode
    • a searchable database for POS transactions. (Some retailers do not believe this is an important feature because they are accustomed to a text inserter that not only covers up images, but does not allow for search capabilities. Technology is available to make POS reporting a very powerful management tool.)
  2. Storage Space - The goal here is to understand your security needs. Why purchase an expensive DVR with a 480 GB hard drive when another product can deliver the same results with a 100 GB unit and save you money. There are many DVRs on the market and each uses a different compression technology to store images.
    • Consider... Analyze how many days of storage the unit can handle instead of how many gigs the unit has. (Do not be fooled into thinking that all machines have the same compression rates!)
  3. Frames per Second (FPS) - Real time speed is 24 FPS. Though it may be tempting to have this much speed for each camera, it is ultimately not necessary. The need for most cameras is about 1-2 FPS. A frame rate of 3-5 FPS can be used in areas that are more important to gain coverage, such as a view of the front door as customers come and go or perhaps sections of the counter where the majority of cash handling occurs.

At Ken Smith Inc., we are always testing new products and have seen over 20 DVRs come through our doors.   We assess the strengths and weaknesses of each DVR and use the system that we feel currently serves the needs of our customers best. We have taken the guesswork out of choosing the right DVR to work for you.
